Pfizer Says Vaccine is Safe and Effective for Kids Ages 5 and 11

  • Pfizer said Monday that its COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for children ages 5 to 11 as it prepares to seek authorization for this age group
  • The vaccine, produced by pharm giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech has already been approved for anyone 12 and older
  • For children ages 5 to 11, Pfizer tested a much lower dose, about a third the amount in each current shot. After their second dose, children ages 5 to 11 developed immune response just as strong as young adults and teenagers
  • According to Pfizer senior President Dr. Bill Gruber, the safety profile of the vaccine in this age population is also good as it has minimal side effects, including fever, sore arms, and body pains
  • Gruber said the company aims to apply to the Food and Drug Administration by the end of the month for emergency use of the vaccine for this age group
