  • Five residents of a nursing home in Colville, Washington, have died of COVID-19 after a recent outbreak that infected at least 74 people
  • The Northeast Tri-Country Health District said, in a statement Thursday, that the infections were caused by the highly contagious Delta variant, which has been largely responsible for the surge in hospitalizations and deaths
  • The first case at the nursing home was reported on August 25, after which 22 staff members and 52 residents got infected. Officials said prior to that time, the home had managed to curb the spread of the virus
  • "Of the 74 total cases related to this outbreak, 33 of the individuals were fully vaccinated and of the five individuals who passed one individual was fully vaccinated," the health district said in the statement
  • Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study that noted that breakthrough cases could occur in the fully vaccinated, especially older adults and those with multiple underlying medical conditions
