  • Many European nations facing a new spike in COVID-19 cases scrapped their pandemic restrictions too soon, a senior World Health Organization warned
  • This comes as the coronavirus outbreak has surged in 18 European countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, the WHO's regional director for Europe said
  • Kluge blamed a sudden change in COVID-19 policy, saying that they lifted the restrictions too "brutally, from too much to too few." This comes as many European countries eased coronavirus restrictions early in 2022 after the omicron variant emerged last year
  • Now, the BA.2 subvariant is sweeping across the continent and many parts of China. The subvariant now accounts for 35% of new coronavirus cases in the United States
  • Experts say the BA.2 subvariant is more infectious and transmissible than the original omicron variant but does not necessarily cause more severe disease
