Lori Shanahan, MPA, brings over 30 years of international health care experience and leadership to her role as Surveyor and Consultant. Her areas of expertise include patient safety and quality, patient experience, staff engagement, business development and health information strengthening.
Lori spent 23+ years working in accreditation and international quality/patient safety with The Joint Commission (TJC) and Joint Commission International (JCI). During her tenure at TJC and JCI, Lori held multiple positions and responsibilities. In her roles at JCI, Lori worked with Ministries of Health and Ministries of Defense from multiple countries to improve the patient safety and quality of care in their hospitals and clinics. Lori also worked on USAID and WHO funded projects which focused on various internal operations such as pharmacy, patient safety and maternal care. Lori assisted with the development of national and regional accreditation or evaluation programs in multiple countries. Lori is yellow-belt certified through TJC.
Lori spent over four years at Planetree International as an Associate Director. She led a multi-year, multi-faceted project with a high-profile international client which focused on person-centered care. Lori coached clients in patient experience and staff engagement and presented at the Planetree International conferences. Most recently, Lori was the Director of International Services at the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). At AHIMA, she provided the overall leadership and management of the international services and product lines, including projects with The World Bank, Ministries of Health and Universities. During her career, Lori has worked with a variety of settings including hospitals, home care, hospice, ambulatory care and long term care.
Lori holds a Master of Public Administration – Health Services from RooseveltUniversity, Chicago and a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administrationfrom the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.
