Emirates Aims to Become the World’s First GHA-Accredited Airline: A Milestone for Medical Travel
Global Healthcare Accreditation and Emirates are working to extend patient-centered standards into air travel, advancing a more connected journey for international patients and new opportunities for healthcare providers.
For patients traveling abroad for healthcare, the journey begins long before they enter a hospital. The flight, airport experience, communication, and coordination between organizations can all influence their confidence and experience.
A major new initiative involving Emirates and Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) brings that part of the journey into sharper focus.
Emirates has announced its ambition to become the world’s first GHA-accredited airline. For GHA, this represents a landmark step toward extending medical travel standards across more of the services international patients rely on, connecting healthcare and air travel through a shared focus on quality, preparedness, and patient experience.
The announcement was made in connection with Emirates’ September 17, 2026, partnership announcement with the Medical Tourism Association (MTA) at Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. The Emirates-MTA agreement addresses medical, wellness, and longevity travel, with an initial focus on Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Bringing Medical Travel Standards into the Airline Journey
A patient traveling for treatment may need assistance with mobility, medical documentation, equipment, or changes to travel plans. After treatment, the return journey may require additional coordination with the healthcare provider and clear communication about support needs. These touch points matter to patients, their families, referring physicians, and the organizations funding their care. They also require cooperation across healthcare and travel services.
GHA’s work with Emirates addresses this need through an airline-specific framework designed around the medical traveler’s experience. The objective is to bring greater consistency to how commercial airlines prepare for, communicate with, and support passengers traveling for healthcare.
Emirates is working toward accreditation. GHA will determine accreditation status based on demonstrated compliance with the applicable standards.
More Than a Year of Collaboration
The initiative follows more than a year of work between GHA and Emirates to examine medical travel demand, patient journeys, and the role of airline networks in connecting patients with care.
This work included reviewing source markets, travel patterns, and existing approaches to accreditation across healthcare, aviation, and related services. It informed the development of the draft GHA Airline Program for Medical Travel, drawing on GHA’s Medical Travel Standards, Medical Travel Facilitator Certification, and WellHotel Accreditation framework.
The proposed framework brings together three areas:
- Business processes: Governance, medical traveler policies, communication, coordination, documentation, and continuous improvement.
- Passenger experience: Support across booking, airport processes, accessibility, baggage, travel disruptions, and onboard service.
- Clinical and safety capability: Fitness-to-travel processes, medical oversight, escalation pathways, and crew preparedness when medical needs arise.
The program complements established aviation safety and regulatory oversight, focusing specifically on the processes and services relevant to medical travelers.
“For years, we have worked to improve every stage of the international patient journey—from the first inquiry and preparation for travel through treatment, recovery and follow-up. Air travel has been the missing link. Working with Emirates gives us an extraordinary opportunity to extend that quality continuum into the journey itself and establish a new benchmark for how health tourism travelers are supported globally.”

What This Means for Hospitals and International Patient Programs
For hospitals and clinics, the patient experience extends beyond the care delivered within their facilities. Travel arrangements, handoffs, and communication can affect how prepared patients feel when they arrive and how supported they feel when they return home.
An airline accreditation framework gives healthcare organizations an additional basis for evaluating travel partners and coordinating the broader patient journey.
For GHA-accredited and certified organizations, the initiative also opens the possibility of closer connections with a major international airline and greater visibility as the model develops. Emirates’ network of nearly 140 destinations provides significant reach, while the Emirates-MTA agreement specifically identifies collaboration with GHA-accredited providers.
Potential opportunities include stronger coordination between healthcare and travel services, participation in industry initiatives, and increased awareness of providers committed to international patient experience. Specific participation arrangements and benefits will develop alongside the partnership.
For healthcare leaders, this milestone reinforces the strategic importance of preparing their international patient programs to meet recognized standards and work effectively with travel and referral partners.
A Broader Vision for Medical, Wellness, and Longevity Travel
The collaboration reflects the range of reasons people travel for their health, from specialized treatment to preventive care, wellness, and longevity services.
The initial GHA airline framework focuses on medical travel. Standards tailored to wellness and longevity travel are planned for a subsequent phase of development.
Together, these efforts advance GHA’s broader vision: strengthening trust across the organizations and services that shape the international patient journey. The Emirates initiative marks an important expansion of that work and a new opportunity to connect healthcare quality with the experience of reaching care.
